Peach-Faced Lovebirds

Peach-faced lovebirds are native to the dry and dessert regions of Africa. They are very sociable animals and can be found in small groups living in the wild. They eat throughout the day and spend a lot of time having baths.

They are also called Rosy faced lovebirds and their coloring can be varied but the males are brighter and smaller than the females, who tend to be darker. Their predominant color is green with either a peach colored or rose colored face.

Lovebirds are well known for the way they sit side by side and turn their faces to each other when sleeping.

In the wild the females tear materials into long strips and tie them by twisting them into their back feathers before flying off to take them to make their nest.

Lovebirds should be given sufficient room to move about in their cage as they are active and need to be provided with toys to keep him/her amused. This is particularly important if you only have one lovebird as they can become lonely. The toys should be robust as the lovebird’s beak is quite strong and can easily break off pieces of the toys.

Peach-faced lovebirds are very affectionate and love to be the center of attention, if you have two birds they may not be quite as interested in you as they have companionship, so if you want its attention its best just to buy one! Like all animals peach-faced lovebirds are individual and unique and require attention and to be well cared for at all times. If you are not prepared to spend time with them they may not be the most suitable pet for you.

Some foods that you may not realize can be potentially harmful to feed to your lovebird, include avocado -all parts including the leaves and stone, chocolate in large amounts -therefore it is advisable never to give chocolate, alcohol -no animal should be given alcohol to drink, household cleaners and detergents -caution is needed in selecting an appropriate cleaner for the cage.

Cat and dog saliva is also a toxin to peach-faced lovebirds. You should wash all fresh fruit and vegetables before giving them to your lovebird as they may have toxins on the skins and as such strawberries are not to be given to peach-faced lovebirds.
