Peach-Faced Lovebirds

Baby Peach-Faced Lovebirds

The Baby Peach-Faced Lovebirds that you buy have most likely been bred and hatched in captivity. They originate from Africa and are about the same size as a budgerigar but much heavier. There are hundreds of different colored birds available but the most common are those with a green body, blue tail and a peach colored head, hence the name.

One very noticeable thing about peach-faced lovebirds is the size of their beak in comparison to the rest of their body. Although they are small and can make great pets as they are relatively easy to tame, they can also be aggressive, very inquisitive and often destructive.

They often learn to talk and can imitate sounds, but rarely say actual words. These are not the birds to buy if you want them to talk coherently. They are noisy and their high pitched trill can be heard throughout the house. One of the positive things about peach-faced lovebirds is that they can live for over twenty years in captivity.

It is important to keep lovebirds entertained whilst they are in their cage, although you can buy specific toys that are designed for budgerigars they will quickly be destroyed by lovebirds. Toys made from wood are an excellent choice as are toys that make a noise, such as bells. Lovebirds easily get bored so ensure you have plenty of toys to swap every week.

As lovebirds are so destructive you will constantly need to check them to make sure they are still safe and there is nothing that could easily break off and choke them.

Lovebirds also need daily flying time. As they are so inquisitive it is important to make sure everywhere is safe for them whilst they explore. Be wary they bite many things, including your door frames!

General daily care is required to keep the lovebirds in the best condition, this includes their cage. If you line the cage with black and white newspaper pages and sprinkle bird sand over the top it will be easier to keep clean and far more cost effective than buying commercial sandpaper. Bird sand will be softer for the lovebirds to land on and also makes spot cleaning easier. You should also clean the actual cage at least once every week by using special cage disinfectant.

Peach-faced lovebirds love to have a shower every other day, this will also help keep their feathers in good condition.

Baby Peach-Faced Lovebirds and mature birds need about 12 hours sleep every night, so to ensure they go to sleep it is advisable to cover their cage, although they might whine to begin with!
