Caring for LovebirdsLovebirds are ideal pets; they are a good choice if it is the first bird you have brought. Caring for lovebirds requires devotion and time; they can live many years and are therefore a long term commitment to keep them healthy. Lovebirds can be very noisy as they love to chatter. They are also very active birds who like to fly. It is advisable to trim their flight feathers to prevent accidents, if you are not competent in doing this seek advice from your vet.
The nails of lovebirds grow quite quickly and will need to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks, again if you are unsure how to do this seek advice from your vet. Keeping a diary of your lovebird’s weight will alert you to any weight loss which may be a sign of illness, if you suspect your lovebird is unwell take him to the vet straight away. Your lovebird’s cage will need to have the paper changed daily and a thorough cleaning of the cage should be carried out on a weekly basis. Lovebirds need a diet of vegetables, fruit, pulses, pasta, pellet and seeds. Be aware that lovebirds must not eat avocados or strawberries as these are toxic. Buy the largest cage you can, making sure that the mesh spacing is half an inch apart. If the mesh is closer together than this your lovebird may get their beak or toes caught, which is likely to cause injury and distress. Lots of toys are essential when caring for lovebirds. They not only keep them occupied but also keep their beaks in good condition. A lovebird’s beak grow all the time, like our finger nails, so by providing toys and perches for them to peck and chew with help to keep their beak trimmed. If you neglect to care for your lovebird properly not only will his health be jeopardized but he may become aggressive and nippy. Many people believe that lovebirds have to be brought in pairs, this is not true, a single lovebird will be quite happy and healthy as he will chose you as his companion. That is why caring for lovebirds requires devotion on your part, like most pets lovebirds are reliant on you to keep them healthy both physically and emotionally. When you have bonded with your lovebird he will love to ride on your shoulder and play with your hair! |
